An apparel designer by training, I studied figurative drawing as a tool for expressing my work. As my design work stretched to include Home, Furniture and Lifestyle products; my sketching led to painting.
My work is grounded in sustainability, working with upcycled forms, regenerative materials, or in the case of these multi-media pieces, working on pages of vintage text.
Using books as a canvas, I hope to remind people that we are so able to work within our means and I love to challenge our culture’s ideas of consumption.
What happens when we create using only the materials that we have?
I am intrigued by the beauty of everyday objets that bring texture and function to our lives--they are either the fabric of our lives or items belonging to the past. Both categories of tend to be taken for granted. I choose to honor them. The layer of text brings the past into focus and hints to what has changed and what remains the same.
The depth of pigment from the watercolors still surprises me; I love the wrinkle that occurs from the water on the pages. Some of my pieces are created with pencil and charcoal and have a more graphic feel. Unorthodox to work on such a paper but I love to push the boundaries of what we come to expect and what is acceptable.
The imperfect nature of these pieces reflects our greater world and acknowledges
what is present in each of us.
